Using the respective elements of the CWGR Public Portal
Homepage
Map:
The map will centre on the Czech Republic if the device’s location services are turned off.
The map will automatically centre on the device’s location (blue dot) and its surroundings if the location services are turned on.
The individual war graves (WG) localities are represented by green location pins. After clicking the pin, according to the zoom level, the whole municipality with extended powers (MEP) statistics, or a link to a locality with more WG or a specific WG will appear.
The MEP statistics which appear when the map is zoomed out and the locality link displayed when it is zoomed in.
Homepage search:
Primarily searches persons’ names in the Czech Republic and abroad.
After entering a search word, it is possible to limit or broaden the search on the next page by either including or excluding the Czech localities or localities abroad using the check boxes on the upper right.
The number of items found is displayed behind the Σ sign.
The search tool is not diacritic-sensitive.
The tool searches for substrings. Thus, the search for bíl will return both the name Bílek and Drobílek. It is also possible to search two substrings. For example, searching for Boh Bil will return both Bohumil Bílek and Bohumír Zvelebil.
The Czech Republic and the International databases
The contents of the databases for the Czech Republic and the localities abroad are separated, each of them displaying slightly different elements for the recorded war graves and the buried and commemorated.
Searching:
War graves search:
Czech Republic:
Searches for the municipality name (not a cadastral unit or an MEP) or its part, or the whole grave identification number. The search tool is not diacritic-sensitive.International:
Searches for the area/town (not a country or a locality) or the whole grave identification number.
Left of the search bar, the number of items found is displayed behind the Σ sign.
It can be cleared by clicking the “Clear filter” button.
Buried and commemorated search:
The search tool is not diacritic-sensitive.
The tool searches for substrings. Thus, the search for bíl will return both the name Bílek and Drobílek. It is also possible to search two substrings. For example, searching for Boh Bil will return both Bohumil Bílek and Bohumír Zvelebil.
Left of the search bar, the number of items found is displayed behind the Σ sign.

Filtering:
War graves filter:
Fields with a drop-down list that cannot take other values than those provided:
for the Czech Republic: Region → Municipality with extended powers → Municipality/Military district, Historic event, Character of the grave
for International: State → Location/Town abroad, Historic event, Character of the grave
Fields with free-text option:
Identification number: A WG’s unique number starts with a location code (country code followed by region and MEP number code for the Czech Republic) and ends with a hyphenated register serial number (e.g. CZE6203-31204 or BEL-41194).
It is only possible to filter using the whole location code. Filtering ending in a hyphen (-) is invalid.
It is also possible to filter only using a part of the serial number.
Buried and commemorated filter:
Fields with a drop-down list that cannot take other values than those provided:
for the Czech Republic: Region → Municipality with extended powers → Municipality/Military district, Historic event, Character of the grave, Citizenship, Nationality, Armed Forces, Rank, Cause of death
for International: Country → Location/Town abroad, Historic event, Character of the grave, Rank, Unit, Cause of death
Fields with free-text option:
First and last name – order-independent, first names are often Czechised (Siegfried → Vítězslav, Adalbert → Vojtěch, Vincenc → Čeněk etc.), we recommend not filling out the whole first name but, for example, only the first letter.
Date of birth and Date of death – usually in the d.m.yyyy or dd.mm.yyyy format, rarely, in older records, the d. m. yyyy format including spaces still prevails.
Place of birth and Place of death – it should not be assumed that the right Czech equivalent has been recorded; German variants or even phonetic transcriptions of German or local names (e.g. the present-day Slovenian Gorice on the Soča WWI battlefront can be written in German (Görz), Italian (Gorizia), Slovenian (Gorica), or phonetically (Gorc, Goricia, Goricie...)) might be recorded.
Note: The “Note” field contains information about e.g. a specific cause of death, unit, burial but also about imprisonment, resistance group, and other information detailing the soldiers’ life stories.
Clear filter: The button is located both at the bottom of the filter menu and right of the search bar. It will also clear the search bar.
Locality export:
Downloads a file in the csv format for the currently filtered localities.
The button is only available on the WG (both the Czech Republic and Abroad) level below the “Filter” button.
List withdrawal: Turns off displaying images in lists for easier browsing.
